Reflexology for new mothers
Reflexology is a science based on the principles that there are reflexes in the feet and hands relative to every organ, gland and part of the body. A reflexology treatment comes in the form of applied pressure, stretching, and movement. A reflexologist is able to find deposits and blockages and break up patterns of stress, restoring balance and relieving tension. Reflexology treatments can also improve a patient’s circulation and elimination – two very important factors in maintaining good health and well-being.
The physical, emotional, and mental changes of pregnancy can be overwhelming for some women. According to the National Center for Complimentary & Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and authors Suzanne Ezner and Elsa Reid (Maternity Reflexology: A Guide for Reflexologists), maternity reflexology has been effective in treating the following common ailments many women face during various stages of pregnancy:
- morning sickness
- pain and discomfort
- heartburn/indigestion
- swollen extremities
- backache
- incontinence
- aiding in infertility
- lack of energy
- digestive disorders
- fatigue
- sore swollen breasts
- cramps
- inducing labor
A study at the Gentofte Hospital in Copenhagen revealed that reflexology is beneficial to women during the labour of childbirth. 58 out of 60 women giving birth experienced "outstanding pain relief using reflexology treatment; and 11 out of 14 women were able to avoid surgery under general anesthesia. Dr. Carsten Lenstrup was so impressed by the results that he said: "Taken as a whole, the results are so good that I am not in any doubt that reflexology can give many women a better, easier and less painful delivery than they would have had otherwise."

Reflexology Training - Jo Annes's at far right
Hi Jo Anne.
I just got your email address from Laurie and wanted to
send you a message about my experiences after reflexology this time.
When I left Wednesday, I felt like the area around my heart was "tender"
it did not hurt or anything, it was just different from the "fullness" I
have been feeling. Anyway, yesterday I had changes in urine (color/odor)
and it was NOTICEABLE. I also had no feelings (angina type pain, fullness -- nothing)
in the area of my heart. It was the most normal I have felt since this whole thing.
Same today. It was very profound. I was telling my husband about it (he now thinks
I have gone off the deep end).
Anyway, I am in awe of this ... it just goes to show that natural means of healing
are effective. I was a believer before, but now I am truly sold.
Take care and thank you.

Had arthroscopic surgery and open surgery to repair rotator cuff tear
and calcific tendonitis. Wore a sling for 4 weeks then developed “frozen shoulder”.
After 4 months in physical therapy and not being fully recovered, I was ready to try
alternative methods. Jo Anne recommended that I see her for reflexology. I was a little
hesitant at first because I didn’t know what this was but I was ready to try anything
and took her advice. So far, I have had 3 sessions with Jo Anne and notice that my
flexibility has improved and my range of motion is continuing to get better. She has
made a believer out of me!

4 years ago was diagnosed with a very large tumor in my leg that wrapped around my sciatica. I had surgery, then radiation for 7 weeks. End result was chronic pain that radiated through my calf and into my foot. Presently on Lyrica, a drug for neuropathy that helps but does not relieve the pain completely. After one session it was amazing to be completely pain free for a whole week. What a relief for the mind and body.

I deal with patellar tendonitis related to growth issues. During my basketball season with all of the stress due to running and jumping I found that at times my knees would bother me more than others. One of these times was during the semifinals of the MHSAA Class A basketball championship game. Mrs. Fro noticed that I was struggling when I was running. My Mom took me that evening for a reflexology treatment and my knees felt great for the championship game the next day.
