WHY RELEXOLOGY?

If you’ve been to my website www.riseandshinetoday.com recently, you may have noticed that I’ve added information regarding reflexology. About the same time I was getting interested in life coaching, I took classes for reflexology. I thought that I was just taking them for fun, but as I got further into the classes, I realized the benefits of reflexology and had practicum clients offer to pay me, I started doing reflexology as another stream of income.

Reflexology is a science based on the principles that there are reflexes in the feet and hands relative to every organ, gland and part of the body. A flexology treatment comes in the form of applied pressure, stretching, and movement. A reflexologist is able to find deposits and blockages and break up patterns of stress, restoring balance and relieving tension. Reflexology treatments can also improve a patient’s circulation and elimination – two very important factors in maintaining good health and well-being.

Reflexology:

*relieves tension
*increases nerve and blood supply
*balances and normalizes the body

I decided to take the classes due to my own personal experience with reflexology:

About 5 years ago, I was diagnosed with migratory Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was having a great deal of swelling in my hands and feet and occasionally a lot of pain in various joints throughout my body. I was to the point that I had difficulty getting my shoes on in the morning due to the swelling, so I would wear sandals to work and then change in to my shoes when I got there. I had started taking both methotrexade and prednisone, but I was still open to alternative solutions.

One evening I was watching the WKAR auction and one of the items for bid was a one hour session of reflexology. I didn’t really know anything about reflexology, but I thought that it was probably similar to a massage and I love massages, so I thought it could only be a good thing. I called in and bid on the item and ended up winning the bid.

A couple of weeks later, I had scheduled an appointment for a Saturday morning. Again, I went in to the session thinking that it would be like a massage. Linda Moskwa, (deceased, God rest her soul) Creative Soles was the reflexologist and as she worked on my feet and hands, she educated me on the benefits of reflexology and some of the potential affects. Again, I’m still thinking it’s a massage! It’s just on my hands and feet. Linda told me that I may be tired for a bit afterwards, but then I’d get a second wind. She also encouraged me to drink lots of liquids in order to flush the toxins that she had broken up. And finally, she suggested that I pay attention to my urine – she said that it might be darker or cloudy or have an odor to it. Being the doubting Thomas that I am, I was still at “it’s a massage!”

I left Linda’s office and went to do my grocery shopping. By the time I got to the checkout counter, I realized that I really wasn’t feeling all that well. I quickly got through the line and to the car. As soon as I pulled in the driveway, I yelled to my husband that he’d have to get the groceries in because I thought I was going to be sick! Sick, nothing! I threw up and threw up, literally from the bottoms of my toes, on and off for a good 12 hours. I couldn’t imagine what was wrong with me. My husband’s comment was, “What kind of a voodoo doctor did you go to?”

Well, by Monday morning, I had stopped throwing up, but the biggest and best surprise was that I had absolutely no swelling left in my body (feet and hands). I was ecstatic! I immediately contacted my Rheumatologist who indicated that it was just a coincidence. I also left a message for Linda, the reflexologist. She immediately called back and said, “Oh my goodness, we have to talk. You’ve had a healing crisis!”

A what???? When I finally connected with Linda, she told me that when she worked on my hands and feet, I had a lot of toxins built up and that she had worked pretty hard to break them up. Apparently, I had so many toxins built up and broken up that my system couldn’t expel them quickly enough by way of urination, so it backed up in to my stomach causing me to be sick and vomit. At the same time, it eliminated the swelling that I’d been experiencing for the last several months.

Needless to say, I immediately became a believer in reflexology and continued with the sessions for some time.

A healing crisis certainly is not going to happen to everyone who receives reflexology. Although I continue to deal with arthritis, the reflexology is very compatible with the medications I take and for me, provides a great deal of relief from pain and swelling.

I have been providing reflexology for the last four years. Since my background is in Human Resources, not science or biology, I am amazed every time someone relates their experiences from their reflexology sessions. I’ve seen reflexology help runners with hip, knee or feet problems such as Plantar Fasciitis and neuromas. It’s beneficial for relieving pain from migraines and regular headaches. I’ve helped a couple of clients recovering from rotator cuff surgery and lots of golfers with various aches and pains. The benefits are amazing!

I realize that you may not be in the Okemos area and therefore may not be able to schedule an appointment with me, but if you are, you may want to try it out. Especially in these difficult economic times when we all seem to be experiencing a fair amount of stress and tension. If you’re not close by, check out your Yellow Pages or the internet. You may find a reflexologist in your area.

Sports Spouses - The Challenge of Being a Coach's Wife

Being a coach’s wife takes a special person. You automatically become the CEO of your household and family. You are the “glue” that holds it all together. When it’s time to move, you make all the arrangements. When it comes to dealing with the kids issues at school, you deal with the teachers. When it comes to soothing your spouse’s bruised ego after a loss, you’re the one who’s there for them.

When recently working with a group of coaches’ wives and asking the top three to five challenges of being a coach’s wife, the number one reason was loneliness followed by work/life balance, limited family time, lack of communication and dealing with change. Sound familiar?

Being a coach’s wife may be fulfilling enough for some women, but not for others. That certainly doesn’t mean that they don’t love their husbands or that they’re not supportive. It may just mean that they also need to be fulfilled as a person themselves. By working with a coach, women would have an opportunity to find out what it is that fulfills them. In addition, they can share experiences and build camaraderie.

Coaching is an opportunity for the wives to identify their own goals and issues, develop a plan for obtaining them and be held accountable.
