TOXIC FRIENDS

You know who I’m talking about. We all have them. The people who always seem to suck the life out of you. You’ve tried and tried to share positive experiences with them and get them to see things from a different perspective, but they continue to choose to find the negative in everything.

Jon Gordon, the energy addict, refers to these people as “energy vampires”. He says that one of the ways to get rid of them is by thinking of positive energy as “energy garlic” and by using that positive energy it causes these people to become powerless in your presence. Positive energy can be cultivated by each of us. Your thoughts become things. The more positive you are, even about the little things, the more difficult it is for them to continue to be negative.

My challenge to you is to use your “energy garlic” when dealing with negative people and see what effect it has on them or at the least, your attitude towards them. For the next week, each morning when you get up, decide on one thing that you’re going to do throughout the day to counteract any “energy vampires” that you might encounter. For example: simply smile, say “Thank You”, let a driver in on the highway, laugh, give compliments. These simple, little acts will deflate the negativity and maybe even inspire the “energy vampires” to do the same for someone else.

And lastly, you might want to look in that mirror and see if there’s any reflection. You certainly don’t want to be known as an “energy vampire” yourself!

Sports Spouses - The Challenge of Being a Coach's Wife

Being a coach’s wife takes a special person. You automatically become the CEO of your household and family. You are the “glue” that holds it all together. When it’s time to move, you make all the arrangements. When it comes to dealing with the kids issues at school, you deal with the teachers. When it comes to soothing your spouse’s bruised ego after a loss, you’re the one who’s there for them.

When recently working with a group of coaches’ wives and asking the top three to five challenges of being a coach’s wife, the number one reason was loneliness followed by work/life balance, limited family time, lack of communication and dealing with change. Sound familiar?

Being a coach’s wife may be fulfilling enough for some women, but not for others. That certainly doesn’t mean that they don’t love their husbands or that they’re not supportive. It may just mean that they also need to be fulfilled as a person themselves. By working with a coach, women would have an opportunity to find out what it is that fulfills them. In addition, they can share experiences and build camaraderie.

Coaching is an opportunity for the wives to identify their own goals and issues, develop a plan for obtaining them and be held accountable.
