| Last Saturday night Keith and I participated in a “Pay It Forward” party. When I first suggested to Keith that we go,I wasn’t sure what his reaction would be. I was pleasantly surprised when he said, “Why not? What else do we have to do?” |

So, not totally knowing what to expect, we headed to the party. There were probably over 200 people who participated.The intent was to go out in to the community for two hours and do a “random act of kindness” for someone and then give them a “Pay It Forward” card and let them know that hopefully, someday they also can do something for someone. Keith and I headed out with the idea of using some gift certificates that I had in my purse. We gave one for a pizza to a young man walking through a parking lot of a Dollar Store. He was very surprised and expressed his gratitude. We looked for a police to give a Starbucks gift certificate to and when we couldn’t find one, we stopped by the Lansing Police Department and gave the certificate to someone there. The policeman who came to the door was very gracious and said that he’d see that someone from their force would “Pay It Forward.” While I was on the phone, Keith drove through an Arby’s and a Burger King and left $10 and a “Pay It Forward” card to cover the cost of the next customer at each restaurant and give them the card. The kids working were a little confused, but hopefully, the customers were pleased. The last place that we stopped was at one of the Fire Stations to drop off a pizza. The fire fighters were very surprised and grateful. They were more than happy to “Pay It Forward.” After two hours, everyone met back at a local restaurant and shared their experiences. Most of them were very heart warming. Some people were a little apprehensive or suspicious when approached with donuts, a gift certificate or whatever. Some of the groups had even done some pre-planning and helped a disabled individual make their home handicapped accessible! It was an amazing experience. I even overheard people saying, “Why don’t I do this more often?” or “I’m making a commitment to doing this at least once a month.” For more information, you can go to www.payitforward.com. In addition, I would challenge you to think about
what you might do for someone else. It’s an awesome experience and
a great idea for a non-profit, party or any organization looking to give
back. |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sports Spouses - The Challenge of Being a Coach's Wife Being a coach’s wife takes a special person. You automatically become the CEO of your household and family. You are the “glue” that holds it all together. When it’s time to move, you make all the arrangements. When it comes to dealing with the kids issues at school, you deal with the teachers. When it comes to soothing your spouse’s bruised ego after a loss, you’re the one who’s there for them. When recently working with a group of coaches’ wives and asking the top three to five challenges of being a coach’s wife, the number one reason was loneliness followed by work/life balance, limited family time, lack of communication and dealing with change. Sound familiar? Being a coach’s wife may be fulfilling enough for some women, but not for others. That certainly doesn’t mean that they don’t love their husbands or that they’re not supportive. It may just mean that they also need to be fulfilled as a person themselves. By working with a coach, women would have an opportunity to find out what it is that fulfills them. In addition, they can share experiences and build camaraderie. Coaching is an opportunity for the wives to identify their own goals and issues, develop a plan for obtaining them and be held accountable.
